Postcolonial and Decolonial Matters

nur für Incom-Mitglieder

In this reading seminar we will approach central discussions and concepts in and developing from postcolonial theory and decolonial critiques. We will read a text from a different author each week, encountering a multiplicity of voices that examine how contemporary conditions, relationships, concepts of knowledge, etc. are still determined by the legacies of colonialism. Included are texts by for example Edward Said, Gloria Anzaldúa, Walter Mignolo or Stuart Hall, amongst others. These various positions will be examined in their own right, as well as in their relationship to the arts and cultural spheres, allowing us to explore and evaluate their relevance, connections and impact for and with our art and design contexts, and our own practices.

Organizational:

This is primarily a reading seminar for a max. of 12 students. No prior engagement with the topics is required. For a complete list of authors/texts and a detailed schedule please see the course syllabus in the files section of the incom space.

A command of English will be necessary, as the texts will be read in English. Depending on students’ language preferences, an effort will be made to accommodate specific translations when possible. Presentations and discussions can take place in either English, German or a mixture of both, depending on the participants’ preferences.
