NATURE LAB 2.0 - Rethinking Our Bond with the Natural World

The urgency of re-examining how humans relate to nature has become impossible to ignore. Major global initiatives such as the European Green Deal, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the Paris Agreement highlight the scale of this challenge and call for new approaches to safeguard the health of our planet. All of them aim to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and advance sustainability more broadly. But what does this mean for the field of design? How can designers actively contribute to shaping more sustainable futures? And in particular: what potential does Textile and Material Design hold in these scenarios?

This semester’s project, NATURE LAB 2.0, invites you to explore contemporary debates on sustainability, nature-centered design, resource use, and human–nature relationships. Issues such as ecological footprint, climate change, and consumer behavior will serve as key entry points. From the perspective …

Machine Learning techniques used in Artificial Intelligence systems became a buzz word that seems to solve everything without questioning how exactly it works.

Machine Learning algorithms form a complex system, like flocking birds or mycelium networks in the forest. The nature of complex systems allows it to behave in complex ways beyond our understanding, but the rules of the system are often very simple and understandable.

In this 2.5 day Lecture + Hands-on Workshop session, we dive into the basics of how Machine Learning functions, discuss how it can contribute within design and artistic projects as a tool, and learn how we can practically implement it through building a simple prototype.

Unlike Large Language Models (like Chat GPT), it is possible to train a small model with fewer data and less process time/energy using machine learning algorithms. This kinds of small models can be useful to analyze sensor data and create more intuitive …
