Maya Schweizer will engage in a discussion on memorials and film, including screenings of her works on that topic.
The relationship between the object of memory and its film representation: the film-monument is one of movement in time through space. The object of memory celebrates the presence of the forgotten, whereas the film-monument ritualises the memorial within its cinematic performance as its subject. There is the desire to photograph a memorial in order to keep it for oneself, combined with the pleasure of showing it to “others.” The photograph as a witness becomes the testimony of one’s visit and anticipates the delight of re-telling the story of the event that the memorial translates into form…
Maya Schweizer (born in Paris, lives in Berlin) investigates processes and structures of remembering and their identity-establishing and narrative function. Schweizer’s practice develops out of intensive research on site which can be understood as thick description in the sense of ethnology-oriented fieldwork.
She studied at the university, Aix-Marseille I, at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig and Berlin University of the Arts, where she graduated.
